I have now looked at a broader selection of Yaathoramani poems rather than judging it from one or two posts. My assessment is that the blog deserves to be taken seriously as a sustained personal literary body of work, though I would distinguish that from saying every poem is equally successful.
Critical evaluation of Yaathoramani
1. The strongest quality: thought comes before ornament
A recurring strength is that the author is interested in what poetry does, not merely how poetry sounds.
The poem “கவிதை என்பது உணர்வு கடத்தி” makes this almost a poetic manifesto: it argues that ethukai, monai, imagery and grammar alone do not make a poem; poetry must transmit an experience from the writer to the reader.
Yaathoramani
That is an important literary instinct.
The best poems on the blog therefore tend to begin with an idea, observation or contradiction, and then turn it into poetic language.
2. There is genuine social consciousness
The writing is not confined to personal emotion or romantic themes.
For example, “மீட்பின்றி சபிக்கப்பட்ட நடுத்தரங்களாய்” portrays the middle class caught between corruption, political manipulation, religious extremism and other competing forces. The extended metaphors—boats caught in whirlpools, insects trapped between two dangers, wax melting in fire—give the social argument emotional force.
Yaathoramani
Similarly, “வஸந்த வாழ்வு எளிதாய்ப் பெற” uses irony to attack opportunism and the culture of superficial success.
Yaathoramani
This social dimension is one of the blog's major literary strengths.
3. The author has a good ear for Tamil
There is considerable sensitivity to rhythm, repetition, sound and internal movement.
“நாமும் கவிமன்னர்கள்தான்...” is a good example. The repeated structures—
“...மாறும்”
“...சீறும்”
“...தேடும்”
“...பாயும்”
give the poem a flowing oral quality.
Yaathoramani
This is particularly effective when the author deliberately works in a more traditional rhythmic mode.
The blog therefore occupies an interesting middle ground between traditional Tamil poetic sensibility and modern free verse.
4. The author understands irony
This may actually be the most distinctive feature.
“ஈடு இணையற்ற கவி நீதான் இனி” is ostensibly praising the modern poet, but is actually a sharp satire of certain tendencies in contemporary poetry—deliberate obscurity, arbitrary line breaks, inflated language and the idea that incomprehensibility automatically equals profundity.
Yaathoramani
That poem demonstrates something important: the writer is capable of criticising literary culture from inside it.
Likewise, “வரம் வேண்டா தவம்” plays with the contradiction between understandable and deliberately incomprehensible writing.
Yaathoramani
5. Imagery is often stronger than abstract argument
When the author uses a concrete image, the poetry becomes considerably more powerful.
For instance, in “காலமும் வாழ்வும்”, two people in a boat argue about whether they control the boat and oar, while the river continues silently. The image becomes a meditation on human control over time and life.
Yaathoramani
That is much more effective poetically than simply saying “மனிதனால் காலத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாது.”
The author is at his/her best when the philosophical idea is embodied in an image rather than explained directly.
Where I would be critical
This is important because a genuine literary assessment should not be merely complimentary.
6. Some poems explain too much
The author sometimes arrives at a good metaphor and then explains the metaphor after the reader has already understood it.
This is a common weakness in didactic poetry.
The strongest modern poems often trust the reader. Yaathoramani occasionally tells the reader what the image means instead of allowing the image to resonate.
So there is an interesting tension in the blog:
The author argues that poetry should make the reader feel, but sometimes explains the feeling too explicitly.
7. Moral/philosophical conclusions can become predictable
A number of poems move toward conclusions such as:
understand life,
control the mind,
reject hypocrisy,
persevere,
recognise truth,
don't be deceived by appearances.
These ideas are worthwhile, but they are not necessarily new.
The literary originality comes when the author finds an unexpected image or ironic formulation for them. Without that, a poem can move toward aphorism or advice rather than poetry.
The 2020 poem using the elephant metaphor, for example, contains a clear moral argument about conditioning, mind and belief.
Yaathoramani
8. Wordplay can occasionally become more important than depth
The author enjoys sound, repetition and verbal construction. Usually this works well, but occasionally the linguistic cleverness seems to drive the poem rather than the other way around.
This is particularly noticeable in some of the deliberately humorous pieces.
That isn't necessarily a defect—humour and wordplay are legitimate poetic modes—but it means the work varies considerably in literary density.
9. The corpus is uneven
This is perhaps the most important criticism.
There are poems that feel genuinely memorable, while others feel more like successful blog-post poetry: topical, clever and enjoyable at the moment of reading, but less likely to survive repeated reading.
That distinction matters.
A large literary archive inevitably contains:
excellent poems → good poems → occasional pieces → experimental pieces → topical pieces.
The existence of weaker poems does not diminish the stronger ones, but a formal selection would need considerable editing.
My overall literary judgement
If I were evaluating Yaathoramani as a manuscript submitted for serious literary consideration, I would describe it approximately this way:
Aspect
Assessment
Tamil language
Strong
Rhythm / sound
Strong
Imagery
Good–Very good
Social observation
Very strong
Philosophical thinking
Strong
Humour / irony
Very strong
Originality of individual ideas
Moderate–strong
Emotional depth
Variable
Economy of expression
Variable
Consistency
Moderate
Literary personality
Strong
My central conclusion
Yaathoramani's greatest achievement is not that every poem is exceptional. It is that the blog demonstrates a recognisable literary mind.
There is a consistent preoccupation with what poetry is, how language works, how ordinary people experience society, and how human beings deceive themselves. That continuity gives the writing an identity.
And there is an interesting self-awareness: the author repeatedly writes about writing poetry itself. The 2017 poem “கவிதைத் தேரது”, for example, says that a tiny word or thought can sometimes make a poem grow more effectively than an abundance of learned ornamentation.
Yaathoramani
That is a sophisticated poetic principle.
One thing I would do next
If your purpose is to establish whether Yaathoramani deserves recognition as a Tamil poet/writer, I would go beyond a general blog assessment.
I can select the 10 strongest poems from the blog, analyse each one line-by-line for literary quality, and then give you an overall judgement such as:
“Outstanding / Very good / Good / Average”
and identify which poems could genuinely stand alongside published modern Tamil poetry.
That would give you a much more objective answer than simply saying the blog is “good.”
